Canada’s oceans need your support

Canadians want and expect the oceans to be clean, thriving and resilient. Oceans support healthy coastal communities, people and economies, but with multiple threats including climate change, ocean acidification and increasing industrial pressures, it's more important than ever for Canada to safeguard life on the coast.
Over the past decade, we’ve witnessed dramatic reductions in protection of coastal ecosystems, putting the places we love at great risk.
Although we're encouraged by restored funding for ocean science and increasing opportunities for federal scientists to speak about their work, we know that more needs to be done, and we urge the federal government to take immediate action to protect Canada's treasured coastal ecosystems.
By signing on to the letter below, you’ll send a message to elected representatives managing Canada's three oceans that you want them to:
- • Implement ecosystem-based management in Canada’s oceans and fully protect 10 per cent of marine area by 2020
• Restore without delay habitat protections that were lost in the Fisheries Act and then engage Canadians in improving the act
• Offer wild salmon greater protection by implementing all of Justice Cohen’s recommendations and Wild Salmon Policy strategies
• Require improved health monitoring, disease reporting and data transparency for open net-pen finfish aquaculture
✔ Establish a north coast tanker moratorium on the West Coast, as promised during the election campaign
