British Columbians want our coastal waters protected

Now is a critical time for British Columbia’s coastal waters.

During the past several years, the province of B.C. and First Nations’ governments have been creating a plan that includes where and how to limit activities that can harm the marine ecosystems we depend on. These marine plans will soon be ready for public review.

Currently, less than three per cent of our ocean area is protected. The vast majority of British Columbians want to see that raised to more than 30 per cent. But some industry lobbyists want no increase in conservation areas.

Make sure your MLA knows British Columbians like you support strong protection and conservation of our coastal waters so they can ensure that marine protected areas are part of the plan for our coast.

Thank you for writing to your MLA today, voicing your support for strong conservation for our precious coastal waters.

Without your support, this historic opportunity could pass us by.

During the past several years, the Province of British Columbia has been working with First Nations, the fishing industry, the tourism sector, conservationists, the forest industry and others to develop plans for our Pacific coast ( I believe this is an important first step in ensuring that our coastal communities can continue to enjoy and benefit from our rich ocean environment. Healthy oceans are central to the economy, culture and identity of this great province. A vast majority of British Columbians want to see more than 30 per cent of our ocean area protected. Currently less than 3 per cent is. Please read the David Suzuki Foundation’s report on Marine Planning and Protection at and support and implement the marine plans and protected areas that you have worked so hard to develop.
