Canada should ban bee-killing neonics in 2018!

Europe will ban neonics by the end of the year. We need parallel action to protect bees in Canada!

Neonicotinoid insecticides (“neonics”) are on their way out of Europe. A new report from the European Union’s scientific risk assessment authority concludes neonics pose a serious danger to honeybees and wild bees. On April 27, 2018, EU member nations approved a ban on all outdoor agricultural uses of neonics, which will enter into force by the end of the year. France already passed a law to phase out all neonics, starting in September 2018.

Meanwhile in Canada, the news is not as good. You can help change that!

The health minister and Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency are responsible for federal pesticide regulation. Several reviews are underway examining risks from neonics, with decisions expected by the end of the year.

The PMRA has already proposed phasing out most uses of one neonic, imidacloprid — but not until 2021 at the earliest! We need to pick up the pace and ban all neonics now.

The Task Force on Systemic Pesticides — a team of independent scientists convened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature — assessed the science on neonics in two comprehensive reviews of peer-reviewed studies, published in 2015 and 2017.

Their conclusion: Neonics harm honeybees and many other species, including aquatic insects at the base of the food chain, earthworms and common birds. They are a major, worldwide threat to biodiversity and ecosystems.

Moreover, the Task Force found neonics are not as effective as once thought and can be replaced by less toxic alternatives.
